In partnership with the National Association of Counties, the National Flag Foundation and the National Sheriffs Association, Florence County is proud to provide a disposal box for the proper retirement of any worn, ragged, or otherwise unsuitable for display United States Flags. This box will be located at the new Veterans Affairs building at 707 National Cemetery Road.
Simply bring your respectfully folded flag to the Veterans Affairs office and deposit it into the box. For reference, to properly fold a flag, fold it lengthwise twice, then make triangular folds until only the Union (blue field with stars) is showing.
According to the United States Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” This disposal box will offer a way for citizens to dispose of their flags with the assurance that they will be disposed of in accordance to the United States Flag code.
